« Expression orale » (speaking): the method for the 3 tasks

The TCF Canada speaking section lasts 12 minutes, face to face with an examiner (10 minutes for the TCF IRN). The examiner assesses your vocabulary, grammar, fluency, pronunciation and ability to interact.

TL;DR

  • TCF Canada speaking: 12 minutes face to face with an examiner, in 3 tasks.
  • Task 1 is a guided interview, Task 2 an interaction where you ask the questions, Task 3 a point of view to defend.
  • Develop every answer with a reason or an example, and never recite a memorized text.

Task 1: the guided interview (2 minutes)

The examiner asks you questions about yourself: family, work, studies, hobbies, plans. There is no preparation.

  • Never answer with a single word: add a reason, a detail, an example.
  • Show several tenses: present (my situation), past (my background), future (my plans).
  • Prepare ideas in advance, but don't recite: the examiner penalizes memorized texts.

Task 2: the interactive exercise (3 minutes 30)

For the TCF Canada, you have 2 minutes to prepare. You act out a situation (asking about housing, an activity, a service) and the examiner plays the other role. You lead the conversation.

  • While preparing, write down 8 to 10 questions on different points: price, hours, conditions, documents, options.
  • Vary the form of your questions: « Est-ce que… ? », inversion (« Pourriez-vous… ? »), « Quel est… ? ».
  • React to the answers: « D'accord », « Et si… ? », « C'est-à-dire ? ».
  • Use the polite conditional: « je voudrais », « j'aimerais savoir ».

Task 3: expressing a point of view (4 minutes 30)

The examiner gives you a topic for debate. You must give your opinion and defend it. The examiner may interrupt to ask you to be more specific.

  • State your position clearly from the start.
  • Develop two or three arguments, each with an example.
  • Consider the opposing argument (« Certains diront que… mais… »).
  • Conclude by summing up your position.

For fluency

  • Buy time naturally: « C'est une bonne question… », « Voyons… ».
  • If you are looking for a word, rephrase rather than stop.
  • Record yourself and listen back: it is the fastest way to spot your hesitations.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the TCF speaking section?+
12 minutes for the TCF Canada: 2 minutes for Task 1, 3 minutes 30 for Task 2 (after 2 minutes of preparation) and 4 minutes 30 for Task 3. For the TCF IRN, 10 minutes: 3 minutes, then 3 minutes 30 and 3 minutes 30, with no preparation (FEI candidate handbook).
Is there time to prepare?+
For the TCF Canada, only Task 2 includes 2 minutes of preparation. For the TCF IRN, no task has preparation time. So practise speaking right away.
What if the examiner interrupts me?+
That is normal: the examiner steps in to get you to develop an idea or to react to your point of view. For the TCF IRN, the handbook states that the examiner may interrupt during Task 3. Answer the question, then pick up your idea again.
How is the speaking section marked?+
Out of 20, with a level from "below A1" (« A1 non atteint ») to C2 for each task. Three criteria count: linguistic (vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, fluency), pragmatic (interaction, structure, development) and sociolinguistic (fitting the situation).
