Numbers, dates and telling time in French

Numbers, dates and times are everywhere in the first questions of Compréhension orale (listening): station announcements, appointments, prices. Mixing them up costs easy points. French counts in an unusual way from 70 to 99 ("sixty-ten", "four-twenties"), so these numbers deserve extra practice.

TL;DR

  • In France and Québec, 70 is « soixante-dix » and 90 « quatre-vingt-dix »; Belgium and Switzerland say « septante » and « nonante ».
  • Dates are written « le 5 octobre 2026 », with no capital letter, and « le 1er » for the first of the month.
  • Announcements use the 24-hour clock (« vingt heures »); conversation uses « huit heures du soir ».

Dates

  • You say « le 3 mars », « le 21 juillet », but « le 1er » (premier) for the first day of the month.
  • Days and months are written without a capital letter: lundi 12 février.
  • Years: 2026 is said « deux mille vingt-six ».

8:30huit heures et demiehuit heures trente

In stations, airports and the media, the 24-hour clock is used: « départ à 17 heures 42 ». French writes times as « 8 h 15 », not "8:15".

Frequently asked questions

How do you write the date in French?+
As « le 5 octobre 2026 », with no capital letter for the month or the day: « le lundi 5 octobre ». Unlike English, the day comes before the month. For the first day of the month, write « le 1er ».
Do « vingt » and « cent » take an s?+
Only when they are multiplied and end the number: quatre-vingts, deux cents. No s if another number follows: quatre-vingt-deux, deux cent trois. « Mille » never takes an s.
« Midi et demi » or « midi et demie »?+
« Midi et demi » and « minuit et demi », because midi and minuit are masculine. But « une heure et demie », « trois heures et demie », because « heure » is feminine.
How do you say 21:45 out loud?+
In an official announcement: « vingt et une heures quarante-cinq ». In conversation: « dix heures moins le quart du soir » ("a quarter to ten in the evening"). Both forms can appear in the same listening document.
