Digital life and technology in the TCF

Digital technology is everywhere in the TCF. At A2, you need to understand a message about an app or a password to change. At B2 and C1, documents question the place of screens, the protection of personal data, the digital divide or artificial intelligence at work. Many candidates use English words on this theme, yet French has precise terms that the examiners expect.

TL;DR

  • Digital topics range from app messages at A2 to debates on screens and AI at B2 and C1.

Goal: You will be able to understand a document about digital life and give a nuanced opinion on screens, social media or artificial intelligence.

The theme in the exam

  • « Compréhension écrite » (reading): an app presentation, an email from the bank about a new code, an article about smartwatches or facial recognition.
  • « Compréhension orale » (listening): a conversation between colleagues about an online course, a report on screens at school, a debate on artificial intelligence.
  • « Expression écrite » (writing): helping a relative use a phone (Task 1), describing a week without social media (Task 2), comparing two opinions on artificial intelligence (Task 3).
  • « Expression orale » (speaking): talking about how you use your phone (Task 1), asking about a digital skills workshop (Task 2), defending a point of view on children and screens (Task 3).

» (the app sends a message).

A text to see them in context (B1 level)

Example in French, as in the exam

The story follows the chronology expected in Task 2: the decision, the difficulties, the effects, the outcome.

Common mistakes

  • Avoid English words when a French term exists: « un courriel » or « un email », « se connecter », « télécharger », rather than « downloader ».
  • « Le portable » can mean the phone or the laptop: be specific if the context is not enough.
  • « Une donnée », « des données »: the word is feminine.

Wrong: « Mes données sont stockés en ligne. » Right: « Mes données sont stockées en ligne. »

A common mistake

In French, you are « sur » Internet, « sur » a website and « sur » social media.

Frequently asked questions

« Numérique » or « digital »?+
In French, « numérique » is recommended: « la transition numérique », « les outils numériques ». « Digital » is a very common anglicism in marketing, but it first means "relating to the fingers".
« Mail », « courriel » or « e-mail »?+
All three are understood. « Courriel » is recommended in France and very common in Quebec; « mail » is informal. In formal writing, « courriel » or « message électronique » are the safest.
Which collocations should I use to talk about the internet?+
« Télécharger un fichier, créer un compte, se connecter à un site, mettre à jour une application, protéger ses données personnelles, passer du temps sur les réseaux sociaux » (download a file, create an account, log in to a site, update an app, protect your personal data, spend time on social media).
How do I argue about screens?+
Avoid being totally for or against: present a useful use (learning, keeping in touch) and a specific risk (sleep, isolation), then suggest a concrete rule, such as screen-free hours.
