Giving your opinion and arguing in French

Task 3 of Expression écrite (writing) and Expression orale (speaking) asks you to give your point of view. Vary your phrases: repeating « je pense que » ("I think that") ten times lowers your vocabulary mark. The phrases below stay in French, since they are what you will use in the exam; the explanations around them help you pick the right one.

TL;DR

  • Vary your opinion phrases (« à mon avis », « selon moi », « il me semble que ») instead of repeating « je pense que ».
  • « À mon avis » takes the indicative; the subjunctive comes only after a negative such as « je ne crois pas que ».
  • In speaking Task 3, state your position at once; in writing, present both views first, then yours.

Giving your opinion

  • « À mon avis, … / Selon moi, … / D'après moi, … » (in my opinion)
  • « Je pense que… / Je crois que… / J'estime que… / Je considère que… » (I think, I believe, I consider)
  • « Il me semble que… / J'ai l'impression que… » (it seems to me, I feel that)
  • « Personnellement, je suis convaincu que… » (personally, I am convinced that)

Agreeing or disagreeing

AgreeingDisagreeing

Je partage l'avis de…Je ne partage pas cette opinion.
C'est exactement ce que je pense.Je ne vois pas les choses ainsi.
Il a entièrement raison.Cet argument ne me convainc pas.

Adding nuance

  • « Je suis en partie d'accord, mais… » (I partly agree, but)
  • « C'est vrai dans certains cas, cependant… » (it is true in some cases, however)
  • « Tout dépend de… » (it all depends on)
  • « D'un côté…, de l'autre… » (on the one hand, on the other)
  • « Certes…, mais… » (admittedly, but)

Presenting the opposing view

  • « Certains pensent que…, mais… » (some people think, but)
  • « On pourrait objecter que… » (one could object that)
  • « Les partisans de… affirment que…, tandis que ses opposants… » (supporters claim, while opponents)

Concluding

  • « En conclusion, … / Pour conclure, … » (in conclusion)
  • « En définitive, je reste convaincu que… » (ultimately, I remain convinced that)
  • « Tout bien considéré, … » (all things considered)

Frequently asked questions

Which phrases should you use to give your opinion in the TCF speaking test?+
Vary them: « À mon avis », « Selon moi », « Je suis convaincu que », « Il me semble que », « Je suis plutôt favorable à ». Avoid repeating « je pense que » in every sentence: variety counts in the linguistic criterion.
Is « à mon avis » followed by the subjunctive?+
No, by the indicative: « À mon avis, ce projet est utile. » The subjunctive only appears with a verb of opinion in the negative or in a question: « Je ne crois pas que ce soit utile. »
How do you say you agree without repeating « je suis d'accord »?+
« Je partage votre avis », « Vous avez tout à fait raison », « C'est aussi ce que je pense ». For partial agreement: « Je suis d'accord sur ce point, mais ».
Should you give your opinion right at the start?+
Yes in speaking, in Task 3: the examiner must understand your position straight away. In writing, you can first present the points of view involved, then clearly state your own.
