Target NCLC 9: the scores to reach

NCLC 9 calls for advanced, precise and nuanced French. Here are the exact TCF Canada scores, what sets this level apart from NCLC 7, and how to make the jump.

TL;DR

  • NCLC 9 on the TCF Canada means 523 to 548 in listening, 524 to 548 in reading and 14 or 15 out of 20 in writing and speaking.
  • In writing and speaking, 14 or 15 out of 20 matches the start of CEFR level C1.
  • The gap from NCLC 7 comes down to precise vocabulary, nuance and the C1 and C2 questions.

What NCLC 9 means in writing

  • Argue with nuance: concede a point before discussing it, rank your arguments, conclude without repeating yourself.
  • Choose the precise word rather than a general one.
  • Vary your structures (subordinate clauses, passive forms, the subjunctive after expressions that require it) with very few mistakes.
  • Fine tune your register: formal letter, article, friendly message.

What NCLC 9 means in listening and reading

  • Understand what is implied, irony and the intention of an author or speaker, not just what is said.
  • Follow abstract reasoning: essays, opinion columns, debates of ideas.
  • Tell two close positions apart and spot the nuance the author defends.

Common hurdles

  • Plateauing around 11 or 12 out of 20 in writing and speaking: a correct but simple text is not enough; the difference comes from precise vocabulary and varied sentences.
  • Losing points on the last listening and reading questions (C1 and C2 levels), where the options are close and you need to catch a nuance.
  • Making sentences longer at the expense of clarity: at this level, complexity has to stay under control.
  • Preparing only everyday topics: abstract social issues carry more weight.

A 4 step study plan

  • Measure the gap: do a full set and look at your results on the C1 and C2 questions. Get a Task 3 corrected to see what separates you from 14 out of 20.
  • Work on precision: build your vocabulary by topic and review the structures that make the difference, such as the subjunctive, compound relative pronouns and reported speech.
  • Argue on abstract topics: practise the Task 3 prompts of the writing sets, compare your text with the model answer, then defend the same topic out loud while recording yourself.
  • Target the hard questions: in listening and reading, go back over the explanations for the C1 and C2 questions you missed; they show which nuance you didn't catch.
