The French conditional: politeness, advice, hypotheses

The conditional is everywhere in Task 2 of Expression orale (speaking), as in « je voudrais savoir… », and in the arguments of Task 3 (« il faudrait… », « si on réduisait… »). It works much like English "would", "could" and "should", but in French it is a verb ending, not a separate word.

TL;DR

  • The conditional is used for politeness (« je voudrais »), advice (« tu devrais ») and hypotheses.
  • Form it with the future stem plus the « imparfait » endings: « je parlerais », « nous pourrions ».
  • Never put it after the « si » of a condition: « si j'avais le temps », not « si j'aurais ».

The three uses

UseExample
PolitenessJe voudrais un renseignement. Pourriez-vous m'aider ?
Advice, suggestionTu devrais te reposer. Il faudrait réduire les déchets.
HypothesisSi j'avais le temps, je ferais du sport.

How to form it

Future stem + imparfait endings: « -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient ». « Parler → je parlerais »; « finir → je finirais »; « prendre → je prendrais ».

Irregular verbs (same stem as in the future): « être → je serais », « avoir → j'aurais », « aller → j'irais », « faire → je ferais », « pouvoir → je pourrais », « vouloir → je voudrais », « devoir → je devrais », « falloir → il faudrait ».

Hypotheses: « si » + « imparfait », then conditional

Si les transports étaient gratuits, plus de gens les utiliseraient.

Si j'habitais au Québec, je travaillerais dans la santé.

Watch out: never a conditional after « si ». You do not say « si j'aurais ».

Frequently asked questions

« Je voudrais » or « je voudrai »?+
« Je voudrais », with an s, for a polite request ("I would like"): that is the conditional. « Je voudrai » is a future ("I will want"), rare in this sense. They sound almost the same, but in writing the difference counts.
How do you form the conditional?+
Take the future stem and add the imparfait endings: « je parlerais, tu finirais, il ferait, nous pourrions, ils seraient ». If you know the future, you already know the stem.
Can you use the conditional after « si »?+
Not after the « si » of a condition: « si j'avais le temps », never « si j'aurais ». The conditional goes in the other half of the sentence: « si j'avais le temps, je ferais du sport ». English follows the same logic ("if I had time", not "if I would have time").
What is the conditional for in a news article?+
To present unconfirmed information: « le ministre démissionnerait » means the news is circulating but has not been verified ("the minister is reportedly resigning"). It is a useful nuance in Compréhension écrite (reading) and Compréhension orale (listening).
