Education and training in the TCF

School, studies and adult training feed many documents and tasks: messages from language schools, university programs, debates about online courses. It is also a personal topic for many candidates who are going back to school or preparing a project in Canada or in France.

TL;DR

  • School, studies and adult training feed many TCF documents and opinion tasks.
  • « Passer un examen » means to take it; to say you passed, use « réussir ».
  • You « échoue à » an exam: never « échouer un examen ».

Goal: You will be able to understand a message from a French school or training centre and argue about school, studies or online learning.

Common situations

  • « Compréhension » (listening and reading): an email from a language school, a message from a school to parents, the presentation of a university program, an article about students dropping out.
  • « Expression écrite » (writing): asking for information about an evening class, describing going back to school, comparing two opinions about online courses.
  • « Expression orale » (speaking): asking about a training program (Task 2), giving your opinion on school or lifelong learning (Task 3).

Spot the argument structure: an advantage, then « pourtant » (yet) introducing the limit, then a nuanced solution in the conclusion.

Common mistakes

  • Saying « passer un examen » to mean you passed it: in French, « passer un examen » means to sit (take) the exam, not necessarily to pass it.
  • Writing « échouer un examen »: the correct form is « échouer à un examen ».
  • Confusing « la formation » (training, often for adults) with « l'éducation » (education as a whole, including the values passed on).

A common mistake

✗ J'ai passé le TCF, donc j'ai mon niveau B2.

✓ J'ai réussi le TCF avec le niveau B2.

« Passer un examen » only means to take it. To say you got the result you wanted, French uses « réussir ».

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between « collège » and « lycée » in France?+
The « collège » takes students aged about 11 to 15 (from « sixième » to « troisième »), the « lycée » students aged about 15 to 18 (from « seconde » to « terminale »). The « baccalauréat » is taken at the end of the « lycée ». Note that a French « collège » is not a college in the North American sense.
What do « licence », « master » and « doctorat » mean?+
They are the three university degrees in France: the « licence » takes three years after the « baccalauréat » (a bachelor's degree), the « master » two more years, then the « doctorat » (PhD). French people also say « bac + 3 » and « bac + 5 ».
What does « redoubler » mean?+
To repeat the same school year because your results were not good enough: « Il a redoublé sa seconde. » The opposite is « passer en classe supérieure » (moving up a year).
« École » or « faculté » for university?+
For higher education, people say « aller à la fac » (informal) or « à l'université ». The word « école » refers to primary school, or to the « grandes écoles » and specialized schools (engineering school, business school).
